Statement – PHM-SA Supports Fees Must Fall.
The People’s Health Movement – South Africa supports the struggle for access to tertiary education in South Africa. The right to education is a basic human right in our constitution.
We believe that the power of education can change some of our health problems as well as addressing a number of Social Determinants of Health. Yet we have seen a high increase of university fees in the past few years.
We demand that President Jacob Zuma, Minster Blade Nzimande together with tertiary institutions must find a workable solution swiftly to end the ongoing protests across the country.
The currently high and unaffordable fees at tertiary institutions has limited access to tertiary education. Increasing fees will force many students to drop out of their studies as most of them are studying on loans. It will also mean that only the wealthier students will retain access to higher education, further exacerbation of education inequalities in South Africa.
We strongly believe that public goods, like Education & health services should be state funded through progressive taxation and cannot be left to ‘the market’.
Further on we would like to call on police to refrain from brutalizing the students. This is a violation of human rights to peaceful protest and an anathema to our democracy.
